“I worked alongside Katie for two years as part of the engagement team at a large national charity. Katie’s role was to look at how to develop the heritage aspects of the charity and how this can be used to influence behaviour and engagement with the public at our sites, as well as finding ways to tell the charities amazing history. In addition she created a new volunteering role and helped shape a change in heritage development staff roles. Katie’s was able to achieve all this in the short space of time as she has a very unique set of skills. Not only does she have a great knowledge of both the heritage and visitor world, she is also highly organised, great at problem solving, creative in finding new solutions or building on ideas and can look at an existing way of working and make a significant change.
To give context on this, three areas of her work typify her skills. She looked at the existing museum manger roles and the broader heritage work that the engagement team were doing and spotted that there was a gap between the roles with heritage support. She remodelled the museum manager role to give greater heritage development and skill sharing which transformed the role from a very local one site management role to one that develops and advises on heritage across the whole of the UK and ROI. Second was her work around making the charities history easy, accessible and meaningful to the public. She had significant input and lead the work from a heritage engagement perspective to create a new way of interpreting our history at sites. She set in place a process to role this out at multiple sites that was simple but effective and also developed a way to give meaning to historic events and how they still influenced our work to this day. This helped to create a standard process that is used in all our development work when creating new interpretation displays. Part of this was the creation of a brand new volunteering role which focused on gathering local history, stories, artefacts and personal stories from our sites, so that this was not lost and could feed into this broader project, a gap that we did not spot until Katie identified this.
The final area to highlight is her skills at people management and governance. As already touched on, she was key at setting standards in place around how we work with our heritage at a local site level, she also managed a number of teams and they were high performing and motivated, a real testament to Katie’s skill with people and ability to lead.
